It all began with a blank sheet of paper. To help us think beyond the horizon, we first had to rethink the very concept of the car more fundamentally than ever before. This opened up new avenues for us to explore. And given that, in a car, each piece of the puzzle depends on all the others, electric driving took on entirely new forms � forms that reflect a whole new inetriors on urban living. While the BMW i3 is immediately recognisable as a genuine BMW, a closer look at its exterior, for example, will illustrate how its sensational design is nevertheless transforming our image of mobility.Progressive and at the same time eminently sustainable, the design interiirs the BMW i3 has won numerous awards.
The international accolades include such prestigious honours as the iF gold product design award, the World Green Car award and the World Car Design of the Year award. Together with his team of development engineers, Head of Design Benoit Jacob created a vehicle that is geared to sustainable electromobility throughout. With the LifeDrive module, a completely new vehicle architecture was developed, intrriors of two independent units: the Life module, comprising the passenger cell made of carbon, and the aluminium Drive module, with chassis and drive train components as well as the high-voltage battery.
At the same time the car�s unique character emerges most clearly in the interior: innovative and sustainable materials such as carbon and wood are not just used in the car but carefully highlighted. In this way the BMW i3 creates new values that are not only visible but tactile as well. Electric mobility is a win-win situation ? when it is designed systematically from the ground up. For example, locating the relatively compact electric motor at the rear creates space at the front for the wheels to turn further in, making the car easier to park and more manoeuvrable.
Another defining feature of the sustainability of the BMW i3 is the large yet narrow tyres and the aerodynamic wheel rims. Both features help reduce rolling resistance, perfecting the overall performance of the BMW i3 while out and about. Another example is the use of carbon which has cleared the way for a more open passenger cell.
The carbon construction enables the central B-pillar to be integrated into the doors. So when the opposing coach doors swing open they allow unrestricted access to the interior. And thanks to the slightly raised seating position and the BMW streamflow design with the windows merging into one another, you also enjoy greater all-round visibility. One particularly distinctive feature of the BMW i3 is the Black Belt that runs from the bonnet across the roof to the rear.
This underlines the car�s innovative LifeDrive jnteriors and gives the passenger cell an even lighter look. Electric motors too need cooling, but as the cooling requirements are way below those of an internal combustion engine, the characteristic BMW kidney grille features a closed design. This brings out the leading-edge character of the BMW i3, particularly when finished with a splash of colour. There is no centre tunnel between the driver and the front-seat passenger.
There is also no B-pillar i the opposing doors.Inside the BMW i3 you can experience sustainability at first hand, because a large proportion of the materials used here are sourced from renewable and recycled raw materials. At the same time they underscore the sophistication and spaciousness of the interior, giving rise to an elegant, loft-like atmosphere and taking the overall sustainability to the next level. It never feels like it�s going to lose control, and the stability control intervenes smoothly, but it�s enough to make you take things a bit easier. EnginesAs mentioned above, there are two powertrain options for the BMW i3. If you opt for the pure electric version, bmw i3 interiors get a 125Kw (168bhp) electric motor connected to the back axle via a single-speed fixed-ratio transmission, and a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery.They�re neatly packaged � the battery is integrated into the rear cabin floor, while the motor takes up one half of the space under the boot floor.
Opt for the 32bhp range-extending two-cylinder petrol generator, and you�ll find it tucked under the boot floor on the opposite side to the electric motor. On the one hand, this is a near-?30,000 ihteriors car from a premium car maker, whose very existence keeps it out of reach to most folks.
On the other, BMW has probably done more than most to address the fundamental problems of battery electric travel; weight; range; price; practicality; battery cost; and technology adoption.Generally speaking, battery electric travel is still really only suitable as a second or third car for the very wealthy, or short-run urban deliveries.
Yet from the get go, BMW's i program went to the heart of these problems. The i3's lightweight carbon-fibre and aluminium chassis reduces inertia, but inteeriors expensive. To reduce costs, BMW and German specialists, SGL separated carbon-fibre from its aeronautical traceability. Using Mitsubishi-produced polyacrylnitrile imported from Osaka, Japan, their $300 bwm hydro-electric-powered plant in Moses Lake, Washington State, processes it into carbon-fibre at low cost, thanks in part, to electricity costing four cents a kWh.
The fibres are transported to Wakersdorf, Germany where they are woven into cloth. And it's a measure of success that Moses Lake is now the world's largest supplier of carbon-fibre, it's 200-strong interriors producing up to 9,000 tonnes a year.It's that carbon-fibre passenger safety cell, with aluminium subframes, that carry intsriors 168bhp/184lb ft BMW-designed and built motor, plus the battery pack with its 96 Samsung lithium-ion cells, which makes the i3, at 1,245kg, one of the lightest and most efficient battery electric cars on sale in the UK. It's been on sale for two and a half years and in that time has sold some 55,000 examples (a total of 1,028 in the UK, 75 per cent of which have been two-cylinder Range-Extender versions).
For reference, that�s a drop in the ocean compared with the 1.8 million or so BMW badged vehicles sold every year, but i3 has at least been proof of concept. According to a recent electric-vehicle market survey, the i3 is the UK's joint second-best selling Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).
Most popular, with 18 per cent of the near 3,000-strong UK BEV market, is Nissan's Leaf, with the Renault's Zoe and the i3 joint second and Tesla's model S third. While overall Bm sales have been climbing strongly, it's from a low base and the report, from the research arm of Haitong Bank, suggests BEV sales are just 0.9 per cent of the UK's 2.6-million annual vehicle market. The i3's new battery pack increases the unrealistic NEDC-cycle range by almost 50 per cent to 195 miles, or more realistically, a range of "between 120 and 130 miles whatever the weather integiors terrain conditions," according to Heinrich Schwackhofer, i3 ii3 manager.Since these new and more energy-dense Samsung cells are packed into the same-sized casing, BMW is also offering to swap out the old 60Ah/22kWh battery packs to the new 94Ah/33kWh units for existing customers, though the service is only offered in Europe, and not on Range-Extender i3s.
Oh, and even if you do meet the criteria, it will cost about �9,000 (?7,644).To complement the new battery, there's a new bodywork colour - Protonic Blue - and a couple of extra trim choices.
Since even the Range Extender i3 produces CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and both cars have zero-emission ranges of at least 70 miles, these new i3 models will continue to qualify interiora a ?4,500 government grant, so grant-inclusive prices are ?27,850 for the battery i3 and ?30,980 for the 38bhp Range-Extender - which has its range extended to a claimed 276 miles. Both cars are on sale in the UK, with the new upgraded charging system, which will charge to 80 per cent capacity in 40 minutes using a high amperage DC charger, or a BMW-fitted wall box which gives 11kW, three-phase charging which charges 80 per cent of capacity in three hours.
On a standard household supply, a full recharge takes about 11 hours. This is a striking vehicle, if not a beautiful one. It doesn't really look like a BMW, resembling instead, more like something that Dyson might offer when it eventually produces its battery car.
The cabin is also different from the standard BMW sombre, looking more like a modern coffee store with its choice of fabrics and steam-bent wood veneers. Those rear-hinged, rear doors are more contrivance than necessity, but they open on lnteriors a bench (just) big enough for a couple of adults. Rear door releases are fitted into the b,w of interiods front-seat head rests, so rear passengers aren�t trapped in the back. Those front seats are comfortable and the through-space flat floor is delightfully old fashioned. The dashboard retains its Apple-like graphics, with the central screen showing the car's range including the topographically weighted range restrictions.
